South Korea’s exports of robots and related parts more than doubled in 2011 from a year earlier, prompting an overall expansion of the country’s robot industry, the government said Wednesday.
Exports by the country’s robot industry came to 521.1 billion won (US$456 million) last year, up from 228.9 billion won in 2010, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
The country’s trade balance in the robot industry also made a sharp turnaround from a 43.9 billion won deficit in 2010 to a surplus of 190.2 billion won as imports only gained 21 percent on-year to 330.8 billion won, it said. Partly helped by growing exports, the country’s robot industry continued to grow in 2011, though at a much slower pace than the year before.
