Global equipment makers have set up their advance bases in Korea to take on the Chinese market. They not only draw up their China strategies in Korea but also organize technical support for their business in China in their divisions located in Korea. Japan’s Ulvac and AKT (a 100% subsidiary of Applied Materials) have recently put up their production, technology, sales support offices in Korea in order to take a bigger bite of the Asian market.
China’s LCD panel makers are either making or planning on massive investments in the development of substrate technologies (e.g. oxide and LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon)) and AM OLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode). Meanwhile, facility investments have almost disappeared in Korea. As a result, China has emerged as the biggest market for global equipment makers. Yet, China’s market response capabilities are outdone by Korea’s, so global equipment manufacturers are ramping up their responses to China by leveraging Korea’s workforce and production capability.
